My sweet, snuggly, loving, curious, adventurous, adorable, joyful, precious baby boy Baxter is celebrating his 1st birthday today!!! It's been a day full of hugs and kisses and snuggles and love and fun and peanut butter pup-cakes and an oh so exciting trip to the pet store to pick out lots of new toys!
If you've been following along as Baxter has boldly navigated through his first year of life you already know that there was never a dull moment! Nope - not with a fearless puppy around! But let's not forget about all of Baxter's big accomplishments. He really has achieved a lot in a very short time!
As you all know, he was on the cover of People Magazine's 100 Most Beautiful Special Edition......
And who could forget when he was named Time Magazine's Man Of The Year.....
And oh my......BAXTER! Ummmm......there was also that time when he made it to the cover of Playgirl and was named This Year's Hottest Stud....
But seriously.....there just aren't words to express how much I love this sweet little baby boy and explain how much joy he's brought to my life. Puppies have a magic that is just impossible to describe! I can only hope that I'm able to make him as happy as he makes me!!!
Happy Birthday to my sweet Baxter Boo Boo! I love you so much and I hope your life is long and blissful and full of all the happiness and love in the world!
Hugs,
Jenny

JENuary Recap!
I did it! I ran and I ran and I ran.......and instead of just running 140 Miles In JENuary, I threw in a few extra miles and ran 150 miles! And why am I only getting around to mentioning this now......a few weeks after the fact.....when I'd been sooooo excited about my 40th birthday running challenge???
Well......the day after JENuary ended....which some people refer to as the first day of February, I came down with a very unfun sore throat, sinus, cold thing for about a week...
And then Baxter came down with an "I ate my bully stick and I stole and ate my sister's bully stick and I ate a whole bag of doggy treats all in one afternoon" thing....
And then Emma came down with a "my whole mouth is falling apart" thing!!!
Poor, sweet, Emma had been acting kind of lethargic and withdrawn and sad.....and I won't even mention how "aromatic" her breath was.....and then I found one bad, loose tooth way in the back of her mouth. We promptly scheduled oral surgery and they found not one.....not two....not three....but SIX BAD TEETH! I won't go into the ugly details but apparently it was a pretty big, infected mess inside her precious little mouth! My poor baby!
And at the end of this epically stressful day, Emma and I were spoiled with surprise flowers from Col Sew Fab!!! Red roses as an early Valentine's Day gift for me....and a sweet, peach bouquet of Get Well flowers for Emma. Awwwww!!!
And after only three days, Emma was back to her normal, sweet, loving, awesome self! This dog is my hero!!! I know I wouldn't be acting the slightest bit pleasant if I'd had major oral surgery three days ago! Go Emma, go!!!
Hugs,
Jenny
P.S. How did your JENuary running/fitness goals go???

Things Baxter Has Chewed On
Oh, how I wish I would have kept a list of all of the things Baxter has chewed on since we brought him home four months ago. In the past two weeks alone he has chewed on......
A bundle of silk embroidery floss
The plastic wrap that held a raw pork roast
A razor
A piece of slate from a patio tile
Col Sew Fab's reading glasses
And a bag of marshmallows.
That last one was actually pretty darn cute. I was putting groceries away, I turned my back on him for about 5 seconds.....and when I turned back around he had dragged the bag across the room, torn it open and his face was inside the bag as he happily chomped away on marshmallows!
And a few other notable items that have been chewed on in the past few months....
Col Sew Fab's wallet
The lid to a gasoline canister
A random sharp, jagged piece of metal that he found in the yard
Every snail in the yard
Lots and LOTS of fabric hexies
Spools of thread
A glow stick (one of those emergency, flare type of things)
My needle book full of threaded needles
Wine corks
And a Christmas ornament with jingle bells on it
Isn't he the best???!!! I love my little guy soooo much! Puppies are awesome!!!

Jenny

Baxter Is A Big Deal!
Baxter has been in desperate need of a new harness and leash for a while now. He
was rapidly outgrowing his "baby boy" harness....it's been getting tighter and tighter......and the last time I put it
on him he yelped as I shut the clasp! Eeeek! I immediately unhooked
it fearing that he was going to break a rib if he took a deep breath
while wearing it!
Why yes, Baxter......you are! You are a VERY big deal.
Hugs,
Jenny
P.S. If any of you have seen the movie "Anchorman" you will understand the multiple layers of funny coming from the fact that I have a dog named Baxter and he now wears a harness and leash that say "I'm Kind Of A Big Deal."
I searched all over the internet for weeks looking for the perfect
harness......because that is what a sane person does with their time. You obsess over
finding just the right harness for your dog. I found so many cute ones
but I really wanted to find one that matched his personality even
though Col Sew Fab said that Baxter doesn't really have a personality yet. And
I guess he's kind of right....Baxter's personality right now consists
of generic sweet, happy, loving, air-headed puppy. But there are small sparks of a real
personality starting to shine through. And as I searched high and low
for the perfect harness there were so many that were cute but they just
didn't mesh with his budding personality....
Sailboats??? Cute....but it just doesn't "say"
Baxter. And he's kind of afraid of the pool so he definitely won't be
taking up sailing or any other water sports anytime soon.
Squirrels??? Again....it's cute.....but Baxter
isn't a big squirrel chaser. He kind of chases anything and everything
right now. He doesn't favor squirrels over the cats over the dust
bunnies over the laser pointer. If it moves he'll chase it.
Argyle??? Totally cute.....but is Baxter a prep? I
just don't know yet. Maybe he's more casual. Or more modern and trendy. Or more
outdoorsy and rugged. Who knows!
Well....it got to the
point that I couldn't put this important decision off any longer. When I went to
PetSmart today I told myself that I couldn't leave without getting a new
harness for Baxter even if it was just plain old solid blue. He HAS to
have a new harness NOW.
And then I saw it! The one! After searching through the rows of leashes and harnesses something caught my eye......and the angels sang.....I had found the perfect harness that just screams BAXTER!
Yup. "I'm Kind Of A Big Deal". Hugs,
Jenny

If The Pets Went Back To School.....
Have you ever wondered what your pets would be like if they were people? All of this "back to school" talk online has made me wonder what my furry children would be like if they were going back to school now like all of the human children.....
First off.....Cassi really wouldn't be going back to school. That girl is 19 so we'll just say that she's already graduated and retired and now spends her days watching birds and puttering in her garden and telling stories about the days before canned cat food had easy open pop tops!
I think Bailey would be in high school. He'd wear skinny jeans, a black leather jacket and sunglasses and he'd ride a motorcycle. He'd be in the drama club and I'm pretty sure I'd be getting frequent calls from the school about him skipping class to go smoke catnip under the bleachers at the football stadium with his friends.
Emma would probably be in the 5th grade. She'd wear pleated, plaid skirts, cardigans and bows in her ears. Her favorite subject would be lunch and I think she'd take ballet lessons just so she could wear a pink tutu and a pretty tiara. She'd volunteer for the school fundraising bake sales so she could eat all of the cookies.
Sammy would be my super social, tom-boy in the 3rd grade. She would wear blue jean overalls and she'd be captain of the soccer team, the yearbook photographer, class president and a Girl Scout. She'd have the most badges and sell the most cookies out of everyone in her troop. I'd end up having to buy half of her cookies every year because Emma ate them.
And Baxter.....sweet little Baxter.....he'd be starting Pre-K and he'd definitely be the most popular boy in the class. Everyone would want to be his best friend. He'd wear shorts with a button down shirt and suspenders. He'd excel at nap time and recess but would refuse to color inside the lines! And he'd definitely be the ring leader of any mischief that occurred in his classroom! Baby powder on the ceiling fan??? Yup - that was Baxter's idea!
Maybe you're just like me and have an inner monologue about these things too. Or maybe I've now confirmed what you've been wondering for a while now......is this girl totally nuts? Maybe I should just get back to sewing hexies now so I can fool you into thinking I'm completely normal tomorrow....
But seriously.....if you think like this too don't be shy! Tell me all about it!
Hugs,
Jenny

World Peace
I have found the key to world peace. It's really quite simple. I can sum it up in one word.....
Puppies.
Yes. It's really that simple. If everyone had a puppy (or a kitten!) of their own to love and snuggle and kiss and squeeze I think the world would be a much happier place. Puppies have a kind of magic about them that can't be described. It's just not possible to be upset when you're looking at this.....
My little Baxter Boo Boo, Nugget, Snuggly Nuggs, Pudding Pup continues to be full of sweetness, curiosity, innocence and pure joy.
He's growing up soooo fast. His paws are huge. His legs are long. He's actually doubled in size in the two months he's been in our family! His sweet and soft Cavalier "fluff" is starting to come in. And he is now able to jump up onto the sofa or the bed effortlessly! This is an accomplishment that fills my heart with both pride and fear.....just think of all the new trouble he can get into now when I'm not looking!
His days are full of chasing butterflies and splashing in puddles and napping in the sunshine...
I think he dreams of rainbows and unicorns and gumdrops and candy canes and seas of lollipops.
And ohhhh....the look on his face when he's about to get a treat....it's almost too much to take! It's a mixture of joy and anticipation and wonder and amazement that something so magical is about to happen!
There's so much to learn from this little guy. Take delight in simple pleasures. Nap when you're tired. If you're happy about something, don't hold back. Never postpone joy. Greet people with enthusiasm. Live life to the fullest and enjoy every second of it! Be so awesome that the world is a better place just because you're in it!
Hugs from me and puppy kisses from Baxter,
Jenny

What A Week!
Emma had been acting a bit off lately....nothing too
serious....just a bit off. I'm not going to bore you with all of the
medical details.....well.....I'm not going to bore you with them in the
main part of the post.....I'll put those in a P.S. at the bottom for
those who are interested. Anyway, after some routine tests and being
looked over by several vets (one of those vets being ME!) and then the
arrival of some scary new symptoms over the weekend and the report of a
radiologist it was looking more and more like she had splenic
cancer......OMG......my Golden Retriever Max died of splenic cancer
three years ago....and if you've ever been unfortunate enough to also
have a dog with splenic cancer you know just how horrible this disease
is. For two days we were pretty convinced that she had the Big C.
Head getting light.....room spinning.....eyes filling with tears.....
I immediately made an appointment with an internist who only comes to town once every other week and he happened to be in town on the exact day I needed him! I kept looking for signs that this was another "Daisyism" but I never found any.....but I'm still going to assume it was Daisy's doing! But wait.....the internist's last name is Bianco....and Bianco means white.....and Daisies are white.....and I'm really reaching here, aren't I?!
After he saw her and sent off about a million blood tests he said the sweetest words I've ever heard...
"I think we're dealing with something treatable here."
And he's Italian so his wonderful accent made this news sound even more fabulous!
All the tests came back at the end of the week and it looks like she MIGHT have a MILD clotting disorder. So basically if she ever gets a cut I'll need to apply pressure for a little bit longer than normal. I can TOTALLY live with that!
I collapsed into an exhausted puddle of goo on the sofa after things started looking up. It's amazing how much a stressful situation can drain you of all your energy! And after three rounds of blood tests, two turns on the x-ray table, two turns on the ultrasound table and three long vet visits Emma was exhausted too! But I dragged myself off of the sofa when a delivery person rang the doorbell.
I grabbed Baxter before I opened the door and stepped outside because that little nugget likes to sneak out and run into the street (BAD habit) when the front door is opened so I always have my hands on him when I open the front door. After I signed for the package I turned around to let myself back in the house and it was LOCKED! In her enthusiasm over the doorbell Sammy jumped up on the door and LOCKED ME OUT!
AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!
I had no phone. No computer. No keys. Nothing but a puppy. And a package that wasn't even mine. It was sent to our house by mistake. Talk about adding insult to injury!
Bax and I went into our fenced in backyard and I tried desperately to pick the locks but it didn't work. I looked for any open windows but I'm OCD about keeping doors and windows locked so that was a big fat FAIL. I did find a sledge hammer.....and I was sooooo tempted......but I didn't use it. Finally I realized I was stuck until Col. Sew Fab got home from work......FIVE HOURS LATER.
I foraged and hunted in the garage and found all sorts of "survival supplies" - a tupperware container marked "Nails" that I used as a water bowl for Baxter.......a box of magazines that hadn't been unpacked yet......and a nasty bottle of Rum which I bookmarked in the back of my mind just in case of "emergency." And when I got hungry I remembered that we had grapevines in our backyard and I "harvested" a snack for myself.
I felt like some sort of MacGyver-esque, elite survivalist because I manage to survive for five whole hours in my backyard without air conditioning, electronics or a kitchen full of food. Aren't ya proud of me?!
And to top off my week I have a 16 mile run on my marathon training plan scheduled for tomorrow. Eeeeek! Wish me luck! Pray for me! Help!!!
Sooooo........"exhausting" is the word I'd use to sum up my week! How's your week going?
Hugs,
Jenny
P.S. Here are Emma's symptoms and a pinch of medical info for those who are interested. At first I noticed she was kind of lethargic and weak and grumpy. Then I discovered that she has a heart murmur. Then we found that she has low platelets (necessary for clotting). Then after she had her blood taken for the first round of tests she developed a massively huge dark purple and red bruise that covered her whole chest and you could feel squishiness under the bruise - that's when I became VERY concerned. A hematoma is common after blood tests but this was much, MUCH more than a hematoma. Then the radiologist thought her spleen looked big on the x-ray - that's when I started to PANIC.
But heart murmurs and low platelets are very common in Cavaliers so those were probably incidental findings. And her heart murmur is very mild so we won't worry too much about that right now. And the lethargy and weakness could have been due to the heat and the stress of a new puppy and the exhaustion of moving. Or perhaps she picked up a bug of some sort. The internist determined that her spleen was not enlarged on further, more accurate tests. And the frighteningly large bruise was most likely due to the mild clotting disorder that she might have and not due to the big C. Time to pop the champagne and celebrate!

Growing Up
My sweet little boy is growing up so fast! It seems like he changed from a chubby baby into a long and lanky "teenager" overnight! He's now able to take flying leaps off of things that once seemed impossibly huge to him. He is eager and carefree and full of sweetness and love. His mind and heart only seem to know happiness and joy.
Hugs from me and puppy kisses from Baxter,
Jenny
He is also very hard to photograph while awake! I've had some requests for more action shots of Baxter but so far I've only been able to capture new images of His Royal Cuteness while sleeping. But isn't he oh so cute as he blissfully dreams of his next big adventure???

Puppy Love
Oh Baxter....my sweet, precious, curious, innocent, trusting, tender, playful and unbelievably adorable puppy! He is just what I needed. I love everything about this little guy. I want to spend every second of the day just soaking up all of that cuteness and kissing his soft, little face a million times. He is the breath of fresh air that we needed after a rough couple of months.
I love the way he makes teeny, tiny, little squeaks when I pick him up. I love the way he sweetly snuggles up next to me in the morning and lays his head beside mine on the pillow. I love his "new puppy smell." I love everything about him!!! He's total puppy perfection!
Hugs,
Jenny
P.S. I know he looks like he's on some sort of flying saucer in that last photo but he really is just floating on the pool! I call that "his first swimming lesson."

It's A Boy!!!
I have so many stories to tell you and so much has happened lately and my mind is a jumbled chaotic mess but all I can focus on right now is MY NEW PUPPY! I finally have another Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in my life!
Emma and I went to pick him up three days ago and it was love at first sight when we met him! I drove over FIVE hours away to pick him up in the San Bernardino Mountains (gorgeous area by the way). It actually took SIX hours to get home because the GPS took me by Los Angeles DURING rush hour. Eeek! Kind of a scary experience for a small town girl with no sense of direction and a car sick puppy! The GPS and I are currently not on speaking terms.
He absolutely adores Emma and does everything she does. I'm so excited that Emma has a "mini-me" who worships the ground her paws walk on.
And she is such a good big sister to him. She's so tolerant and patient and she happily "volunteered" to sleep in the crate with him for moral support during his first few nights here.
And are you ready to get some major goosebumps???!!! Do you remember how Daisy sent me a sign that our new house in California was THE ONE? After that happened I actually thought to myself "I wonder if Daisy is going to send me a puppy too....." And guess what - She did! This puppy was born on March 26.....and guess who else was born on March 26.....Yup....Daisy! The new puppy and Daisy share a birthday. Do you have goosebumps yet???
So now that you've all been properly introduced to the incredibly sweet, smart and stunning Sir Baxter Buckingham Puddingstone III I need to get back to staring at him as he sleeps on a down pillow beside me.
Hugs,
Jenny
P.S. We're going to call him Baxter for short. And there was no Sir Baxter Buckingham Puddingstone I or II. My cousin came up with the idea to give him an outrageously long name with Sir at the front and III at the end. And I reserve the right to change the name if I come up with something better in the next week! He doesn't know his name yet so it won't be a problem for him.
P.P.S.S. Don't worry about Emma! She's not sad in that first photo. We'd woken up at 5:00 a.m., driven 5 hours and entered a home that had 7 Cavaliers in it. She was just exhausted and a wee bit overwhelmed!

A Sign From Daisy
When I found out that Daisy died I didn't have the luxury of curling up into a ball and hiding from the world for a few weeks. We were still in California and after days of searching we still hadn't found a house. So I put my pajamas on, convinced myself that I had to find a house for the sake of our other fur babies and we headed out the door to meet the realtor.
I really felt like there was no way I would like any house we saw that day. I was pretty sure I was going to hate everything I saw because I was so upset. But the moment we walked into the first house that day we knew it was THE ONE. It just felt like home. We kept walking through the house expecting to find some horrible flaw but it actually kept getting better and better. I actually had the thought fly through my head "did Daisy send this house to us?" It was perfect. We even kept joking that we weren't cool enough to live in this house!
A few days later I was looking at pictures of the house to try to cheer myself up and distract myself. And I stopped on this picture and gasped........
Do you see what I see? Look closely.....do you see it now???
There's a bouquet of daisies on the coffee table of our dream house. I'm normally not one who believes in signs.....but signs don't get anymore obvious than this, do they?
As of Friday, the dream house is now ours. And in a few short weeks we'll be living in the house where Daisy left a little sign for me to find. Pretty amazing, isn't it?
Hugs,
Jenny
And I want to send out a huge thank you to everyone who left such sweet comments on my last post. I'm sorry I haven't been able to personally respond to all of you yet but your comments have really lifted me up and warmed my heart. It's so incredible to know that so many people would take the time to leave such kind words for someone they've never met. Big hugs to all of you!

Daisy: March 26, 1997 - May 6, 2013
I'm crushed. I'm broken. My heart has been shattered into a million little pieces.
While we were house hunting in California last week my precious little Daisy died unexpectedly in her sleep while boarding. She was 16 years old. She had a few health problems that were being managed with medication. But she was playing and purring and eating and snuggling and acting like a completely normal, happy, healthy cat before we left. There was not even the slightest hint that something so tragic was about to happen. It was a shocking blow to hear the news that she was gone.
I boarded her and Cassi (19 years old) at the vet because of their age and they're both on medication. I also boarded Bailey because he and Daisy are inseparable best friends and I didn't want them to have to be apart. That didn't work out so well....
And all I can do now is torture myself with questions. Was Daisy terrified the last few days of her life because she was boarding and not at home? Did the anxiety of boarding cause this to happen? Did she think her Mommy abandoned her? Was there something else we could have done for her? Some other test? Some other medication? Something that would have prevented this?
It gives me small comfort to know that she peacefully died in her sleep and that she was sharing a "condo" with her best friend but I will never get over the fact that I never got to say goodbye. I never got to see her one last time. I didn't get to hold her and tell her I love her and be the last thing she saw before she left us.
And in a bizarre twist of fate, that was the same day we found our dream house in California. So what should have been one of the happiest days ever ended up being a tie for "worst day of my life" with the day that Max died. I know life has ups and downs. And sometimes they're really big ups and downs. But wow.....have you ever had them both on the same day?
Yesterday we had her funeral. Col. Sew Fab took me to a private pet cremation service three hours away. It was almost as traumatic as the day I got the terrible news. It's just so final. Daisy doesn't exist anymore...
I am exhausted. I can't sleep. I can't think clearly. And we are moving across the country in four weeks. It's just too much to deal with all at once.
You've probably already figured out that my pets are not just pets to me. They ARE my family. They ARE my babies. I like them more than most people I know. Sorry. I know that's not an appropriate thing to say but it's true. My life revolves around my fur babies and they are spoiled and loved and treated like the earth revolves around them.
I am so glad I've always been someone who drops what they're doing if one of their pets wants attention. I've always known that I never wanted to look back and say "why did I ignore a fur baby who was begging for attention because I was busy folding laundry or paying bills or doing some other mundane task?" The trivial tasks will always be there. But your loved ones won't.
So give your fur babies some extra attention today. Even if you are overwhelmed with tons of other stuff to do you will NEVER regret taking some extra time out of your day to take your dog out to play or snuggle with your purring cat.
Hugs,
Jenny

The Birthday Girl!
My sweet puppers celebrated her 7th birthday yesterday and she partied like a little rock star! Every year we try to meet up with Emma's doggy family and her breeders at the dog park for a little celebratory reunion and it causes some serious cuteness overload!
Left to Right: Nikki - littermate, Kerry - biological father, Pearl - littermate, Doug - friend, Lisa- littermate, Emma Jane!
And because a birthday isn't complete without cake and presents we also stopped by PetSmart to pick out a new toy and the doggy bakery to pick up her cake.
Then it was time to collapse and spend the rest of the day snoozing and snoring because partying like a rock star is some seriously hard work!
And this concludes your Daily Dose of Cute!
Hugs,
Jenny

Work In Progress Wednesday - Monotony
Two rows down. Seven to go. And loving every moment of monotonous, soothing, no-thought-required tying of this quilt.
Daisy loves it too.
And do you happen to remember the big, huge, secret project that I started working on back in November? Well....it's almost done....it's so close to being done that I can almost taste the celebratory champagne......but the project is at a stage that is so boring and monotonous that I look forward to taking breaks to fold laundry and do dishes. Yeah.....sometimes monotony is good. And sometimes it makes you delusional. With a little luck and a lot of work I'll be putting that project in the DONE column next week.
Happy Sewing,
Jenny

Recovering
There's not much that I wouldn't do for my kitterses and pupperses. Poor little Bailey had to have oral surgery on Friday for a bad tooth that was so painful he was starting to lose weight! Ouch! And there's only one vet hospital in the area that I trust with my babies and it's conveniently located......one and a half hours away in the town that I used to live in. Sooooo.....on Friday I woke up at 4:30 a.m., got ready, left the house at 6:30 a.m., dropped him off at the hospital at 8:00 a.m., ran errands all day, picked him up at 5:00 p.m. and then drove the long hour and a half back home. Double ouch. I felt the same way he looked by the end of the day....poor little guy....

And Daisy.....wow....I haven't told you about Daisy yet, have I? Do you remember this? The huge, scary looking mass we found in her chest back in September. And do you remember how all the experts were fairly certain it was the Big C? Well......guess what???!!! Her latest checkup shows that it's most likely NOT the Big "C." I won't bore your with all of the medical details but wow.....just WOW! What else is there to say?!

I think it's time to whip out the tuna, the catnip and the laser pointer and have ourselves a little party, don't you?!
Hugs,
Jenny
P.S. Bailey is recovering well. He kind of looks like he was in a bar fight with a swollen face and squinty eyes but he's eating and snuggling and starting to act like his normal self again!

Merry Christmas
Merry Late Christmas! We've had a wonderfully lazy and indulgent holiday season.....sleeping late.....nibbling on prime rib and bacon and blue macaroni and cheese and rum cake and peanut butter truffles......sipping champagne.....watching movies....sitting in the hot tub....and just hanging out. Perfection.
The kitties also had a wonderful Christmas and Daisy (who is doing amazing well!) fully dedicated herself to guarding all of the new toys and kitty treats.....
While Emma was dedicated to shredding every last piece of tissue paper that dared to cross her path....
And I attempted to learn how to use my new Christmas present from Col. Sew Fab. Watch out Katniss 'cause here I come!
And of course I "surprised" John with our yearly matching Christmas pajama pants! This year I had my heart set on using a pink fabric from the Alpine Wonderland collection but I was kind enough to make Col. Sew Fab's pants using a blue fabric from the same collection. Even though I think he'd look fabulous in pink! But I still don't think I'll be able to get a picture of him in the actual pants so this will have to do.....
And now I'm kind of looking forward to getting back to some post-holiday "normalcy"......even though I'll miss eating truffles with wild abandon at all hours of the day because for some reason chocolate seems to become an inappropriate breakfast food after December 31!
Hugs,
Jenny
P.S. I used the Sew Easy Pajama Pants pattern for my pants and the Sleep Well pattern for Col. Sew Fab's pants.
